VPN (Virtual Private Network)

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a technology that creates a secure and encrypted connection over a less secure network, such as the Internet. It allows users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to a private network.

Real-Life Use Cases:

  • Secure Remote Access: Employees working remotely can securely access their company’s internal network. Data Encryption on Public
  • Wi-Fi: Encrypting data when using unsecured public Wi-Fi networks, like in coffee shops or airports.
  • Bypassing Geo-Restrictions: Accessing content that is regionally restricted by routing the connection through servers in different locations.

The Explanation:

Think of a VPN as a secure, private tunnel through a crowded, noisy city (the internet). Typically, your online journey (data transmission) would take you through busy streets (public networks), where your movements could be observed (data vulnerability). A VPN provides a private, underground passageway. While you’re in this tunnel, no one outside can see where you’re going or what you’re doing, and you emerge at your destination (web service) without anyone on the outside knowing where you started or what path you took
