HOCS stressed the importance of having a cloud-powered network that could efficiently scale without adding complexity. This project was made more difficult by the pandemic and the supply chain shortages faced throughout the industry. In addition to needing immediate access to hardware, they also sought easy installation and comprehensive support to maintain uninterrupted service for both assisted living providers and patients. The situation was urgent, as many facilities were unable to provide essential telehealth or in-person services due to lockdowns, and the shift to telehealth was unprecedented for most. This urgency led HOCS to seek partnerships that could provide the reliability and performance necessary in a demanding healthcare environment.

The company encountered logistical challenges when upgrading network systems with aging hardware, where infrastructure could be limited. For this particular project, the client operated in decades-old buildings, making integrating modern technology into layouts difficult. HOCS prioritized finding a solution that could seamlessly blend into these environments while improving connectivity.

The Solution

HOCS evaluated several vendors, including Cisco and Extreme Networks, as well as some more SMB-focused brands. The initial deployment started at several post-acute care provider facilities in Philadelphia. HOCS installed over 300 EnGenius access points (APs) throughout the 20 facilities. HOCS focused on installing ECW230 access points and ECS1528FP switches, chosen for their advanced capabilities and ease of integration. Each facility had 120 to 160 beds and required, on average, eighteen ECW230 access points and one ECS1528FP switch to provide a reliable network for staff and patients. The team also had to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing patient care during the transition. The deployment included comprehensive training for staff to familiarize them with the new systems and ensure a smooth transition.

“The engineers and field technicians love the product because it makes deployment easier with less manual configuration and fewer issues with rebooting access points. Keeping them happy and reducing their time on site also makes us happy,” Zahler said.
